ABSTRACT

In our daily lives we use mathematics for each and every act we commit. It follows that mathematics as a discipline is embedded all human activities. Hence the study tried to investigate how mathematics is affecting performance of science subjects. The general objective of the study was to determine the impact of mathematics on performance of science subjects the research also seek to determine the relation between mathematics and science and to establish measures on how to make science subjects appealing to students The research observed and found out what the teachers do in class as compared to what they prepare their lessons, how they handled the students in these mathematics lessons and their perceptions towards the teaching and ability of students in the subject. The researcher also endeavored to find out the students' perceptions towards the teaching of mathematics and their performance in the subject.. The researcher's findings hopefully could be utilized to inform policy and contribute towards the improvement of the education sector in general. The research was conducted between April and August 2008. The study was based on the impact of mathematics' in performance of teaching methods effects on performance of pupils in mathematics. The research was carried out in Kianyaga boys, Kiamutugu, Kabare boys, Ngiriambu girls, Kerugoya boys and Kerugoya girl's secondary schools in Kirinyaga district.. The respondents to the research were students and teachers in the schools from the sample size. The information collected during the research study was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness. After collecting the questionnaires they were edited for completeness and consistency across the respondents and to locate omissions. Information obtained from the research study was presented and analyzed using bar charts, narratives, and statistical figures
